Message from President - Colleges become Special Interest Groups

28 May 2008
At its recent meeting the Council replaced our Colleges with Special Interest Groups (SIGs).

The role of the Colleges has changed dramatically over the years.  After starting as a mechanism for balancing the interests of members from our two predecessor organisations, they have gradually moved to what they are now - interest groups fostering professional development and providing leadership in key areas in which our members practice.  The change was strongly supported by member feedback and reflects the fact that most of our members have always practiced across a wide range of  areas - we were never just insurance advisers or financial planners.

So now practitioner members are just that: and rather than having to nominate and arrange for mentoring in one or more colleges, a new member will have to identify a "suitably qualified" mentor approved by the Certification Committee.

Following the move to SIGs the Board has appointed the following SIG Chairs:

Financial Planning - Neville Caird
Insurance - Kathy Jarrett
Investment - vacant
Lending - Lyn McMorran

Other than Lyn's (which is a temporary appointment while the Lending SIG is formed) the appointments are for two-year terms beginning on 1 July 2008.

The Board has also decided to recommend the formation of a fifth SIG - for Trustee Advice - to the November 2008 Council.

We would like expressions of interest from members interested in becoming the Chair of the Investment, Lending and Trustee SIGs.
SIG Chairs will be asked to nominate suitable members to their committees.  If you are interested in being a committee member on one of the SIGs, please contact the relevant Chair directly, or David Hutton if there is no Chair yet.

Thanks and hearty congratulations to our new SIG Chairs!  Your willingness to serve and your commitment to professional leadership is another sign of the Institute's good heart, and a powerful message to the wider community that we are serious about being the professional body for financial advisers.
